1.1“Ariyaṁ vo, bhikkhave, paccorohaṇiṁ desessāmi.“Mendicants, I will teach you the noble descent.1.2Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmī”ti.Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”

1.3“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.“Yes, sir,” they replied.1.4Bhagavā etadavoca:The Buddha said this:

2.1PTS 5.252“Katamā ca, bhikkhave, ariyā paccorohaṇī?“And what, mendicants, is the noble descent?2.2Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako iti paṭisañcikkhati:It’s when a noble disciple reflects:2.3‘pāṇātipātassa kho pāpako vipāko—‘Killing living creatures has a bad result2.4diṭṭhe ceva dhamme abhisamparāyañcā’ti.in the present life and in lives to come.’2.5So iti paṭisaṅkhāya pāṇātipātaṁ pajahati;Reflecting like this, they give up killing living creatures,2.6pāṇātipātā paccorohati.they descend from killing living creatures.

3.1… ‘Adinnādānassa kho pāpako vipāko—… ‘Stealing has a bad result3.2diṭṭhe ceva dhamme abhisamparāyañcā’ti.in the present life and in lives to come.’3.3So iti paṭisaṅkhāya adinnādānaṁ pajahati;Reflecting like this, they give up stealing,3.4adinnādānā paccorohati.they descend from stealing.

4.1… ‘Kāmesumicchācārassa kho pāpako vipāko …pe…… ‘Sexual misconduct has a bad result …’ …4.2kāmesumicchācārā paccorohati.they descend from sexual misconduct.

5.1… ‘Musāvādassa kho pāpako vipāko …pe…… ‘Lying has a bad result …’ …5.2musāvādā paccorohati.they descend from lying.

6.1… ‘Pisuṇāya vācāya kho pāpako vipāko …pe…… ‘Backbiting has a bad result …’ …6.2pisuṇāya vācāya paccorohati.they descend from backbiting.

7.1… ‘Pharusāya vācāya kho pāpako vipāko …pe…… ‘Harsh speech has a bad result …’ …7.2pharusāya vācāya paccorohati.they descend from harsh speech.

8.1… ‘Samphappalāpassa kho pāpako vipāko …pe…… ‘Talking nonsense has a bad result …’ …8.2samphappalāpā paccorohati.they descend from talking nonsense.

9.1… ‘Abhijjhāya kho pāpako vipāko …pe…… ‘Covetousness has a bad result …’ …9.2abhijjhāya paccorohati.they descend from covetousness.

10.1… ‘Byāpādassa kho pāpako vipāko …pe…… ‘Ill will has a bad result …’ …10.2byāpādā paccorohati.they descend from ill will.

11.1… ‘Micchādiṭṭhiyā kho pāpako vipāko diṭṭhe ceva dhamme abhisamparāyañcā’ti.… ‘Wrong view has a bad result both in the present life and in lives to come.’11.2So iti paṭisaṅkhāya micchādiṭṭhiṁ pajahati;Reflecting like this, they give up wrong view,11.3micchādiṭṭhiyā paccorohati.they descend from wrong view.11.4Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, ariyā paccorohaṇī”ti.This is called the noble descent.”
