1.1“Tayome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ.“These three individuals are found in the world.1.2Katame tayo? What three?1.3Nirāso, āsaṁso, vigatāso.The hopeless, the hopeful, and the one who has done away with hope.1.4Katamo ca, bhikkhave puggalo nirāso?And what, mendicants, is a hopeless individual?1.5Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo nīce kule paccājāto hoti, caṇḍālakule vā venakule vā nesādakule vā rathakārakule vā pukkusakule vā dalidde appannapānabhojane kasiravuttike, yattha kasirena ghāsacchādo labbhati. It’s when an individual is reborn in a low family—a family of corpse-workers, bamboo-workers, hunters, chariot-makers, or scavengers—poor, with little to eat or drink, where life is tough, and food and shelter are hard to find.1.6So ca hoti dubbaṇṇo duddasiko okoṭimako bavhābādho kāṇo vā kuṇī vā khañjo vā pakkhahato vā, na lābhī annassa pānassa vatthassa yānassa mālāgandhavilepanassa seyyāvasathapadīpeyyassa. And they’re ugly, unsightly, deformed, sickly—one-eyed, crippled, lame, or half-paralyzed. They don’t get to have food, drink, clothes, and vehicles; garlands, fragrances, and makeup; or bed, house, and lighting.1.7So suṇāti:They hear this:1.8‘itthannāmo kira khattiyo khattiyehi khattiyābhisekena abhisitto’ti.‘They say the aristocrats have anointed the aristocrat named so-and-so as king.’1.9Tassa na evaṁ hoti:It never occurs to them:1.10‘kudāssu nāma mampi khattiyā khattiyābhisekena abhisiñcissantī’ti.‘Oh, when will the aristocrats anoint me too as king?’1.11Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, puggalo nirāso.This is called a hopeless individual.

2.1PTS 1.108Katamo ca, bhikkhave, puggalo āsaṁso?And what, mendicants, is a hopeful individual?2.2Idha, bhikkhave, rañño khattiyassa muddhāvasittassa jeṭṭho putto hoti ābhiseko anabhisitto acalappatto. It’s when someone is the eldest son of an anointed aristocratic king. He has not yet been anointed, but is eligible, and has been confirmed in the succession.2.3So suṇāti:He hears this:2.4‘itthannāmo kira khattiyo khattiyehi khattiyābhisekena abhisitto’ti.‘They say that the aristocrats have anointed the aristocrat named so-and-so as king.’2.5Tassa evaṁ hoti:It occurs to him:2.6‘kudāssu nāma mampi khattiyā khattiyābhisekena abhisiñcissantī’ti.‘Oh, when will the aristocrats anoint me too as king?’2.7Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, puggalo āsaṁso.This is called a hopeful individual.

3.1Katamo ca, bhikkhave, puggalo vigatāso?And what, mendicants, is an individual who has done away with hope?3.2Idha, bhikkhave, rājā hoti khattiyo muddhāvasitto. It’s when a king has been anointed.3.3So suṇāti:He hears this:3.4‘itthannāmo kira khattiyo khattiyehi khattiyābhisekena abhisitto’ti.‘They say that the aristocrats have anointed the aristocrat named so-and-so as king.’3.5Tassa na evaṁ hoti:It never occurs to him:3.6‘kudāssu nāma mampi khattiyā khattiyābhisekena abhisiñcissantī’ti.‘Oh, when will the aristocrats anoint me too as king?’3.7Taṁ kissa hetu? Why is that?3.8Yā hissa, bhikkhave, pubbe anabhisittassa abhisekāsā sā paṭippassaddhā.Because the former hope he had to be anointed has now died down.3.9Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, puggalo vigatāso.This is called an individual who has done away with hope.
