1.1PTS 3.270“Pañcime, bhikkhave, ādīnavā puggalappasāde.“Mendicants, there are these five drawbacks of placing faith in an individual.1.2Katame pañca?What five?

1.3Yasmiṁ, bhikkhave, puggale puggalo abhippasanno hoti, so tathārūpaṁ āpattiṁ āpanno hoti yathārūpāya āpattiyā saṅgho ukkhipati.The individual to whom an individual is devoted falls into an offense such that the Saṅgha suspends them.1.4Tassa evaṁ hoti:It occurs to them:1.5‘yo kho myāyaṁ puggalo piyo manāpo so saṅghena ukkhitto’ti.‘This individual dear and beloved to me has been suspended by the Saṅgha.’1.6Bhikkhūsu appasādabahulo hoti.They lose much of their faith in mendicants.1.7Bhikkhūsu appasādabahulo samāno aññe bhikkhū na bhajati.So they don’t frequent other mendicants,1.8Aññe bhikkhū abhajanto saddhammaṁ na suṇāti.they don’t hear the true teaching,1.9Saddhammaṁ asuṇanto saddhammā parihāyati.and they fall away from the true teaching.1.10Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭhamo ādīnavo puggalappasāde.This is the first drawback in placing faith in an individual.

2.1Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, yasmiṁ puggale puggalo abhippasanno hoti, so tathārūpaṁ āpattiṁ āpanno hoti yathārūpāya āpattiyā saṅgho ante nisīdāpeti.Furthermore, the individual to whom an individual is devoted falls into an offense such that the Saṅgha makes them sit at the end of the line. …2.2Tassa evaṁ hoti:2.3‘yo kho myāyaṁ puggalo piyo manāpo so saṅghena ante nisīdāpito’ti.2.4Bhikkhūsu appasādabahulo hoti.2.5Bhikkhūsu appasādabahulo samāno aññe bhikkhū na bhajati.2.6Aññe bhikkhū abhajanto saddhammaṁ na suṇāti.2.7Saddhammaṁ asuṇanto saddhammā parihāyati.2.8Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, dutiyo ādīnavo puggalappasāde.This is the second drawback in placing faith in an individual.

3.1Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, yasmiṁ puggale puggalo abhippasanno hoti, so disāpakkanto hoti …pe… so vibbhanto hoti …pe… so kālaṅkato hoti.Furthermore, the individual to whom an individual is devoted leaves for another region … disrobes … passes away.3.2Tassa evaṁ hoti:It occurs to them:3.3‘yo kho myāyaṁ puggalo piyo manāpo so kālaṅkato’ti.‘This individual dear and beloved to me has passed away.’3.4Aññe bhikkhū na bhajati.So they don’t frequent other mendicants,3.5Aññe bhikkhū abhajanto saddhammaṁ na suṇāti.they don’t hear the true teaching,3.6Saddhammaṁ asuṇanto saddhammā parihāyati.and they fall away from the true teaching.3.7Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, pañcamo ādīnavo puggalappasāde.This is the fifth drawback in placing faith in an individual.

3.8Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca ādīnavā puggalappasāde”ti.These are the five drawbacks of placing faith in an individual.”
