.4MaccharājacariyaThe Fish King’s Conduct

.1“Punāparaṁ yadā homi,“Then again when I was1.2maccharājā mahāsare;a fish king in a great lake,1.3Uṇhe sūriyasantāpe,in the heat of the sun1.4sare udaka khīyatha.the water in the lake evaporated.

.1Tato kākā ca gijjhā ca,Then crows and vultures,2.2kaṅkā kulalasenakā;herons, hawks, and falcons,2.3Bhakkhayanti divārattiṁ,perched near the fish2.4macche upanisīdiya.and devoured them day and night.

.1Evaṁ cintesahaṁ tattha,There I had the following thought,3.2saha ñātīhi pīḷito;being harassed with my relatives:3.3‘Kena nu kho upāyena,‘By what means3.4ñātī dukkhā pamocaye’.can I free my relatives from this suffering?’

.1Vicintayitvā dhammatthaṁ,Considering the value of the Dhamma,4.2saccaṁ addasa passayaṁ;I saw the truth as a support.4.3Sacce ṭhatvā pamocesiṁ,Standing in the truth,4.4ñātīnaṁ taṁ atikkhayaṁ.I freed my relatives from that holocaust.

.1Anussaritvā sataṁ dhammaṁ,Recollecting the true Dhamma,5.2paramatthaṁ vicintayaṁ;considered the ultimate goal,5.3Akāsiṁ saccakiriyaṁ,I made a declaration of truth5.4yaṁ loke dhuvasassataṁ.that would last eternally in the world.

.1‘Yato sarāmi attānaṁ,‘So long as I can recall myself,6.2yato pattosmi viññutaṁ;since I became aware,6.3Nābhijānāmi sañcicca,I do not recall deliberately6.4ekapāṇampi hiṁsitaṁ.harming even a single living creature.

.1Etena saccavajjena,By this declaration of truth,7.2pajjunno abhivassatu;may Pajjuna rain down!7.3Abhitthanaya pajjunna,Thunder forth, Pajjuna!17.4nidhiṁ kākassa nāsaya;Disperse the trove of the crow!7.5Kākaṁ sokāya randhehi,Subject the crow to sorrow,27.6macche sokā pamocaya’.and free the fish from sorrow!’

.1Saha kate saccavare,As this excellent truth was declared,8.2pajjunno abhigajjiya;Pajjuna thundered forth.8.3Thalaṁ ninnañca pūrento,In an instant the rain poured down,8.4khaṇena abhivassatha.soaking the uplands and valleys.

.1Evarūpaṁ saccavaraṁ,Having made such supreme effort9.2katvā vīriyamuttamaṁ;for this excellent truth,9.3Vassāpesiṁ mahāmeghaṁ,I made the great cloud pour down,9.4saccatejabalassito;relying on the force of the power of truth.9.5Saccena me samo natthi,There is no one to equal my truthfulness:9.6esā me saccapāramī”ti.this is my perfection of truth.”
