1.1“Punāparaṁ yadā homi,“Then again when I was1.2sutasomo mahīpati;Sutasoma, Lord of the Earth,1.3Gahito porisādena,captured by a cannibal1.4brāhmaṇe saṅgaraṁ sariṁ.I remembered my promise to a brahmin.

2.1Khattiyānaṁ ekasataṁ,A hundred aristocrat warriors2.2āvuṇitvā karattale;he strung up by their hands.2.3Etesaṁ pamilāpetvā,Having drained their blood,2.4yaññatthe upanayī mamaṁ.he brought me for sacrifice.

3.1Apucchi maṁ porisādo,The cannibal asked me,3.2‘kiṁ tvaṁ icchasi nissajaṁ;‘What do you wish for—release?3.3Yathāmati te kāhāmi,I shall act as you think,3.4yadi me tvaṁ punehisi’.so long as you will return.’

4.1Tassa paṭissuṇitvāna,I promised him that I4.2paṇhe āgamanaṁ mama;would return at dawn.4.3Upagantvā puraṁ rammaṁ,I went to the delightful city4.4rajjaṁ niyyādayiṁ tadā.and then renounced kingship.

5.1Anussaritvā sataṁ dhammaṁ,Recollecting the true Dhamma,5.2pubbakaṁ jinasevitaṁ;fostered by former Victors,5.3Brāhmaṇassa dhanaṁ datvā,I gave money to the brahmin,5.4porisādaṁ upāgamiṁ.and returned to the cannibal.

6.1Natthi me saṁsayo tattha,I had no doubt6.2Ghātayissati vā na vā;that he was going to kill me.6.3Saccavācānurakkhanto,Protecting my truthful speech,6.4Jīvitaṁ cajitumupāgamiṁ;I went to give up my life.6.5Saccena me samo natthi,There is no one to equal my truthfulness:6.6Esā me saccapāramī”ti.this is my perfection of truth.”

7.1Sutasomacariyaṁ dvādasamaṁ.
