Sudattasutta

When Anāthapiṇḍika heard that a Buddha had arisen in the world, he rose first thing in the morning to go and visit him. But a mysterious darkness caused him to hesitate, so a spirit repeatedly encouraged him to step forward. Finally he reached the Buddha, and asked if he had slept well.

Translator’s notes

  1. This story, which tells of the conversion of the Buddha’s chief layman follower, is detailed further in the Vinaya at Kd 16:4.1.1.

The Cool Grove was a pleasant place to meditate, notable as the place where the Buddha moderated the monk Soṇa’s excessive striving (AN 6.55).

    ↩ sn10.8:1.1
  2. His given name was Sudatta, but he is usually known by the sobriquet Anāthapiṇḍika, “feeder of the poor”. He features in countless discourses as the ideal of the generous lay follower.

    ↩ sn10.8:1.2
  3. Sivaka appears alongside Mucalinda at DN 32:10.12. Mucalinda supported the Buddha after his awakening, as Sivaka supports Anāthapiṇḍika here. Sivaka might be identified with Shiva (see SN 2.21).

    ↩ sn10.8:1.12
  4. The commentary says that the “hundred” in the first two lines should be multiplied by the “thousand” of line three, but the Chinese parallels at SA 592 and SA2 186 prefer the more modest figure.

    ↩ sn10.8:2.1
  5. After all that drama, he asks a simple question, as one does when nervous. But the Buddha’s reply is more than satisfying.
