1.2“Dhātusova, bhikkhave, sattā saṁsandanti samenti.“Mendicants, sentient beings join together and converge because of an element.1.3Hīnādhimuttikā hīnādhimuttikehi saddhiṁ saṁsandanti samenti.Those who have inferior convictions join together and converge with those who have inferior convictions.1.4Atītampi kho, bhikkhave, addhānaṁ dhātusova sattā saṁsandiṁsu samiṁsu.In the past …1.5Hīnādhimuttikā hīnādhimuttikehi saddhiṁ saṁsandiṁsu samiṁsu.

3.1Etarahipi kho, bhikkhave, paccuppannaṁ addhānaṁ dhātusova sattā saṁsandanti samenti.At present, too, sentient beings join together and converge because of an element.3.2Hīnādhimuttikā hīnādhimuttikehi saddhiṁ saṁsandanti samenti.Those who have inferior convictions join together and converge with those who have inferior convictions.

7.1Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, khīraṁ khīrena saṁsandati sameti;It’s like how milk joins together with milk,7.2telaṁ telena saṁsandati sameti;oil with oil,7.3sappi sappinā saṁsandati sameti;ghee with ghee,7.4madhu madhunā saṁsandati sameti;honey with honey,7.5phāṇitaṁ phāṇitena saṁsandati sameti;and molasses with molasses.7.6evameva kho, bhikkhave, dhātusova sattā saṁsandanti samenti.In the same way, sentient beings join together and converge because of an element.7.7Kalyāṇādhimuttikā kalyāṇādhimuttikehi saddhiṁ saṁsandanti samenti.Those who have good convictions join together and converge with those who have good convictions.7.8Atītampi kho addhānaṁ …In the past …7.9anāgatampi kho addhānaṁ …In the future …7.10etarahipi kho paccuppannaṁ addhānaṁ dhātusova sattā saṁsandanti samenti.At present, too, sentient beings join together and converge because of an element.7.11Kalyāṇādhimuttikā kalyāṇādhimuttikehi saddhiṁ saṁsandanti samentī”ti.Those who have good convictions join together and converge with those who have good convictions.”

8.1Idamavoca bhagavā.That is what the Buddha said.8.2Idaṁ vatvāna sugato athāparaṁ etadavoca satthā:Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:

9.1“Saṁsaggā vanatho jāto,“Socializing creates a snarl;¹9.2asaṁsaggena chijjati;they’re cut off by being aloof.9.3Parittaṁ dārumāruyha,If you’re lost in the middle of a great sea,9.4yathā sīde mahaṇṇave.and you clamber up on a little log, you’ll sink.

10.1Evaṁ kusītamāgamma,So too, a person who lives well10.2sādhujīvipi sīdati;sinks by relying on a lazy person.10.3Tasmā taṁ parivajjeyya,Hence you should avoid such10.4kusītaṁ hīnavīriyaṁ.a lazy person who lacks energy.

11.1Pavivittehi ariyehi,∥Dwell with the noble ones11.2pahitattehi jhāyīhi;who are secluded and determined11.3Niccaṁ āraddhavīriyehi,and always energetic;11.4paṇḍitehi sahāvase”ti.the astute who practice absorption.”
