Translator’s notes

  1. Situated near Nāḷandā north of Rājagaha, this village is associated with Sāriputta; the commentary says it was his home town. He speaks there twice with the wanderer Sāmaṇḍakāni (AN 10.65, AN 10.66), and it was the site of his passing (SN 47.13).

  2. Found only in this chapter, his name means “eater of black plums”, perhaps as an ascetic diet (cf. MN 12:52.1). With the exception of the final discourse, all the discourses of this chapter follow the same format, where Jambukhādaka asks for clarification of a central Dhamma term, making the chapter a handy guide to key vocabulary. Several of the terms are found in dependent origination; for explanations of these see SN 12.1 and SN 12.2.
