1.3Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā rattandhakāratimisāyaṁ abbhokāse nisinno hoti, devo ca ekamekaṁ phusāyati. Now at that time the Buddha was meditating in the open during the dark of night, while a gentle rain drizzled down.

1.5Atha kho bhagavā “māro ayaṁ pāpimā” iti viditvā māraṁ pāpimantaṁ gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi:Then the Buddha, knowing that this was Māra the Wicked, replied to him in verse:

Translator’s notes

  1. Māra appears like the godlings of Susīma’s assembly (SN 2.29:10.2). It is not easy to know what gods to trust.

  2. Paddhagū seems to be pa + addha + gū (or cara at SN 6.4:10.1), “one who travels in front”. They serve kings (Thag 13.1:1.2). The use of this term here suggests that they will not make Māra’s job easier for him by smoothing his path.
