1.1Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā vaṅgīso sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.At one time Venerable Vaṅgīsa was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

1.2Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā vaṅgīso aciraarahattappatto hutvā vimuttisukhaṁ paṭisaṁvedī tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imā gāthāyo abhāsi:Now at that time Vaṅgīsa had recently attained perfection. While experiencing the bliss of freedom, on that occasion he recited these verses:¹

2.1“Kāveyyamattā vicarimha pubbe,“We used to wander, drunk on poetry,²2.2Gāmā gāmaṁ purā puraṁ;village to village, town to town.2.3Athaddasāma sambuddhaṁ,Then we saw the Buddha,2.4Saddhā no upapajjatha.and faith arose in us.

3.1So me dhammamadesesi,He taught me Dhamma:3.2khandhāyatanadhātuyo;the aggregates, sense fields, and elements.3.3Tassāhaṁ dhammaṁ sutvāna,When I heard his teaching3.4pabbajiṁ anagāriyaṁ.I went forth to homelessness.

4.1Bahunnaṁ vata atthāya,It was truly for the benefit of many4.2bodhiṁ ajjhagamā muni;that the sage achieved awakening—4.3Bhikkhūnaṁ bhikkhunīnañca,for the monks and for the nuns4.4ye niyāmagataddasā.who see that they’ve reached certainty.

5.1Svāgataṁ vata me āsi,It was so welcome for me5.2mama buddhassa santike;to be in the presence of the Buddha.5.3Tisso vijjā anuppattā,I’ve attained the three knowledges,5.4kataṁ buddhassa sāsanaṁ.and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.

6.1Pubbenivāsaṁ jānāmi,I know my past lives,6.2Dibbacakkhuṁ visodhitaṁ;my clairvoyance is purified,6.3Tevijjo iddhipattomhi,I am master of three knowledges, <j>attained in psychic power,6.4Cetopariyāyakovido”ti.expert in encompassing the minds of others.”

7.0Tassuddānaṁ

7.1Nikkhantaṁ arati ceva,7.2pesalā atimaññanā;7.3Ānandena subhāsitā,7.4sāriputtapavāraṇā;7.5Parosahassaṁ koṇḍañño,7.6moggallānena gaggarā;7.7Vaṅgīsena dvādasāti.
