1.1“Sīlamevidha sikkhetha,One should train just in ethical conduct,1.2asmiṁ loke susikkhitaṁ;for in this world, when ethical conduct is1.3Sīlañhi sabbasampattiṁ,cultivated and well-trained,1.4upanāmeti sevitaṁ.it provides all success.

2.1Sīlaṁ rakkheyya medhāvī,Wishing for three kinds of happiness—2.2patthayāno tayo sukhe;praise, prosperity,2.3Pasaṁsaṁ vittilābhañca,and to delight in heaven after passing away—2.4pecca sagge pamodanaṁ.the wise would take care of their ethics.

3.1Sīlavā hi bahū mitte,The well-behaved have many friends,3.2saññamenādhigacchati;because of their self-restraint.3.3Dussīlo pana mittehi,But one lacking ethics, of bad conduct,3.4dhaṁsate pāpamācaraṁ.drives away their friends.

4.1Avaṇṇañca akittiñca,A man whose ethics are bad has4.2dussīlo labhate naro;ill-repute and infamy.4.3Vaṇṇaṁ kittiṁ pasaṁsañca,One who is ethical always has4.4sadā labhati sīlavā.a good reputation, fame, and praise.

5.1Ādi sīlaṁ patiṭṭhā ca,Ethical conduct is the starting point and foundation;5.2kalyāṇānañca mātukaṁ;the mother at the head5.3Pamukhaṁ sabbadhammānaṁ,of all good things:5.4tasmā sīlaṁ visodhaye.that’s why you should purify your ethics.

6.1Velā ca saṁvaraṁ sīlaṁ,Ethics provide a boundary and a restraint,6.2cittassa abhihāsanaṁ;an enjoyment for the mind;6.3Titthañca sabbabuddhānaṁ,the ford where all the Buddhas cross over:6.4tasmā sīlaṁ visodhaye.that’s why you should purify your ethics.

7.1Sīlaṁ balaṁ appaṭimaṁ,Ethics are the matchless power;7.2sīlaṁ āvudhamuttamaṁ;ethics are the ultimate weapon;7.3Sīlamābharaṇaṁ seṭṭhaṁ,ethics are the best ornament;7.4sīlaṁ kavacamabbhutaṁ.ethics are a marvelous coat of armor.

8.1Sīlaṁ setu mahesakkho,Ethics are a mighty bridge;8.2sīlaṁ gandho anuttaro;ethics are the unsurpassed scent;8.3Sīlaṁ vilepanaṁ seṭṭhaṁ,ethics are the best perfume,8.4yena vāti disodisaṁ.that float from place to place.

9.1Sīlaṁ sambalamevaggaṁ,Ethics are the best provision;9.2sīlaṁ pātheyyamuttamaṁ;ethics are the unsurpassed supply for a journey;9.3Sīlaṁ seṭṭho ativāho,ethics are the best vehicle9.4yena yāti disodisaṁ.that take you from place to place.

10.1Idheva nindaṁ labhati,In this life they’re criticized;10.2peccāpāye ca dummano;after departing they grieve in a lower realm;10.3Sabbattha dummano bālo,a fool is unhappy everywhere,10.4sīlesu asamāhito.because they are unsteady in ethics.

11.1Idheva kittiṁ labhati,In this life they’re renowned;11.2pecca sagge ca summano;after departing they’re happy in heaven;11.3Sabbattha sumano dhīro,the attentive are happy everywhere,11.4sīlesu susamāhito.because they are steady in ethics.

12.1Sīlameva idha aggaṁ,Ethical conduct is best in this life,12.2paññavā pana uttamo;but one with wisdom is supreme.12.3Manussesu ca devesu,Someone with both virtue and wisdom12.4sīlapaññāṇato jayan”ti.is victorious among men and gods.
