1.1“Uṭṭhehi nisīda kātiyāna,Get up, Kātiyāna, and sit!1.2Mā niddābahulo ahu jāgarassu;Don’t sleep too much, be wakeful.1.3Mā taṁ alasaṁ pamattabandhu,Don’t be lazy and let the kinsman of the negligent,1.4Kūṭeneva jinātu maccurājā.the King of Death, catch you in his trap.

2.1Seyyathāpi mahāsamuddavego,Like a wave in the mighty ocean,2.2Evaṁ jātijarātivattate taṁ;rebirth and old age sweep you under.2.3So karohi sudīpamattano tvaṁ,Make a safe island of yourself,2.4Na hi tāṇaṁ tava vijjateva aññaṁ.for you have no other shelter.

3.1Satthā hi vijesi maggametaṁ,The teacher has mastered this path,3.2Saṅgā jātijarābhayā atītaṁ;which transcends chains, <j>and the fear of birth and old age.3.3Pubbāpararattamappamatto,Be diligent in the first and final watches of the night,3.4Anuyuñjassu daḷhaṁ karohi yogaṁ.and dedicate yourself to practice.

4.1Purimāni pamuñca bandhanāni,Free yourself from your former bonds!4.2Saṅghāṭikhuramuṇḍabhikkhabhojī;Wearing your outer robe, with shaven head, <j>eating almsfood,4.3Mā khiḍḍāratiñca mā niddaṁ,don’t delight in play or sleep,4.4Anuyuñjittha jhāya kātiyāna.dedicate yourself to absorption, Kātiyāna.

5.1Jhāyāhi jināhi kātiyāna,Meditate and conquer, Kātiyāna,5.2Yogakkhemapathesu kovidosi;you’re an expert in the path <j>to sanctuary from the yoke.5.3Pappuyya anuttaraṁ visuddhiṁ,Having arrived at unexcelled purity,5.4Parinibbāhisi vārināva joti.you’ll be extinguished as a flame by water.

6.1Pajjotakaro parittaraṁso,A lamp of feeble flame6.2Vātena vinamyate latāva;is bent down by the wind, like a creeper;6.3Evampi tuvaṁ anādiyāno,just so, kinsman of Indra,6.4Māraṁ indasagotta niddhunāhi;shake off Māra, without grasping.6.5So vedayitāsu vītarāgo,Free of lust for feelings,6.6Kālaṁ kaṅkha idheva sītibhūto”ti.await your time here, cooled.
