1.1“Ekaputto ahaṁ āsiṁ,I was an only child,1.2piyo mātu piyo pitu;loved by my mother and father.1.3Bahūhi vatacariyāhi,They had me by practicing1.4laddho āyācanāhi ca.many supplications and observances.

2.1Te ca maṁ anukampāya,Out of sympathy for me2.2atthakāmā hitesino;wishing me well and wanting the best for me,2.3Ubho pitā ca mātā ca,my mother and father2.4buddhassa upanāmayuṁ.took me to see the Buddha.

3.1‘Kicchā laddho ayaṁ putto,“We had this son with difficulty;3.2sukhumālo sukhedhito;he is delicate and pampered.3.3Imaṁ dadāma te nātha,We offer him to you, Lord,3.4jinassa paricārakaṁ’.to attend upon the victor.”

4.1Satthā ca maṁ paṭiggayha,The teacher, having accepted me,4.2ānandaṁ etadabravi;declared to Ānanda:4.3‘Pabbājehi imaṁ khippaṁ,“Quickly give him the going-forth—4.4hessatyājāniyo ayaṁ’.this one will be a thoroughbred!”

5.1Pabbājetvāna maṁ satthā,After he, the Teacher, had sent me forth,5.2vihāraṁ pāvisī jino;the victor entered his dwelling.5.3Anoggatasmiṁ sūriyasmiṁ,Before the sun set5.4tato cittaṁ vimucci me.my mind was freed.

6.1Tato satthā nirākatvā,Consequently, the Teacher didn’t neglect me;6.2paṭisallānavuṭṭhito;when he came out from seclusion,6.3‘Ehi bhaddā’ti maṁ āha,he said: “Come Bhadda!”6.4sā me āsūpasampadā.That was my ordination.

7.1Jātiyā sattavassena,At seven years old7.2laddhā me upasampadā;I received ordination.7.3Tisso vijjā anuppattā,I’ve attained the three knowledges;7.4aho dhammasudhammatā”ti.oh, the clear rightness of the teaching!
