.4TemiyacariyaTemiya’s Conduct

.1“Punāparaṁ yadā homi,“Then again when I was1.2kāsirājassa atrajo;the true-born son of the king of Kāsi,1.3Mūgapakkhoti nāmena,Mūgapakkha was my name,11.4temiyoti vadanti maṁ.they called me Temiya.

.1Soḷasitthisahassānaṁ,None of the sixteen thousand court women2.2na vijjati pumo tadā;had given birth to a male.2.3Ahorattānaṁ accayena,After many days and nights2.4nibbatto ahamekako.I was born, the only one.

.1Kicchā laddhaṁ piyaṁ puttaṁ,To my father I was a dear son born with difficulty,3.2abhijātaṁ jutindharaṁ;a light-bringer of impeccable lineage.3.3Setacchattaṁ dhārayitvāna,Holding a white parasol over my bed,3.4sayane poseti maṁ pitā.my father provided for me.

.1Niddāyamāno sayanavare,Sleeping on the fine bed,4.2Pabujjhitvānahaṁ tadā;then having awoken,4.3Addasaṁ paṇḍaraṁ chattaṁ,I saw the pale umbrella,4.4Yenāhaṁ nirayaṁ gato.by which I had gone to hell.2

.1Saha diṭṭhassa me chattaṁ,At the sight of the umbrella5.2tāso uppajji bheravo;a terrible dread arose in me.5.3Vinicchayaṁ samāpanno,I reached the decision,5.4‘kathāhaṁ imaṁ muñcissaṁ’.‘How can I be free of this?’

.1Pubbasālohitā mayhaṁ,A former blood-relation of mine,6.2devatā atthakāminī;a goddess wishing to help,36.3Sā maṁ disvāna dukkhitaṁ,saw my suffering6.4tīsu ṭhānesu yojayi.and enjoined me to three states.

.1‘Mā paṇḍiccayaṁ vibhāvaya,‘Don’t show intelligence,7.2Bālamato bhava sabbapāṇinaṁ;be as a fool to all creatures,7.3Sabbo taṁ jano ocināyatu, let all folk scorn you,7.4Evaṁ tava attho bhavissati’.thus you will achieve your goal.’

.1Evaṁ vuttāyahaṁ tassā,When she had spoken,8.2idaṁ vacanamabraviṁ;I said the following.8.3‘Karomi te taṁ vacanaṁ,‘I shall do your bidding,8.4yaṁ tvaṁ bhaṇasi devate;just as you say, goddess.8.5Atthakāmāsi me amma,You want what’s best for me, mom,48.6hitakāmāsi devate’.you desire my welfare, goddess.’

.1Tassāhaṁ vacanaṁ sutvā,After hearing her words,9.2sāgareva thalaṁ labhiṁ;I was like one lost at sea reaching the shore.9.3Haṭṭho saṁviggamānaso,I was thrilled, my mind elated,9.4tayo aṅge adhiṭṭhahiṁ.and I resolved on three factors.

.1Mūgo ahosiṁ badhiro,I became deaf, and dumb,10.2pakkho gativivajjito;and crippled, unable to walk.10.3Ete aṅge adhiṭṭhāya,Resolving on these factors,10.4vassāni soḷasaṁ vasiṁ.I lived for sixteen years.

.1Tato me hatthapāde ca,Then they rubbed my hands and feet,11.2jivhaṁ sotañca maddiya;my tongue and ears as well,11.3Anūnataṁ me passitvā,and seeing no defect in me,11.4‘kāḷakaṇṇī’ti nindisuṁ.denounced me as ‘black-ear’.5

.1Tato jānapadā sabbe,Due to that, the entire country,12.2senāpatipurohitā;including the generals and priests,12.3Sabbe ekamanā hutvā,with one mind12.4chaḍḍanaṁ anumodisuṁ.cheered as I was discarded.

.1Sohaṁ tesaṁ matiṁ sutvā,When I heard of their decision13.2haṭṭho saṁviggamānaso;I was thrilled, my mind elated,13.3‘Yassatthāya tapociṇṇo,‘The goal for which I lived fervently13.4so me attho samijjhatha’.I have achieved.’

.1Nhāpetvā anulimpitvā,Bathed and oiled,614.2veṭhetvā rājaveṭhanaṁ;with my turban wrapped,14.3Chattena abhisiñcitvā,anointed, they held the umbrella14.4kāresuṁ puraṁ padakkhiṇaṁ.as they paraded me around the city.

.1Sattāhaṁ dhārayitvāna,After the seventh day holding the umbrella,15.2uggate ravimaṇḍale;when the sun’s orb had risen,15.3Rathena maṁ nīharitvā,I was taken out by chariot,15.4sārathī vanamupāgami.until the charioteer came to a wood.

.1Ekokāse rathaṁ katvā,Leaving the chariot in the open,16.2sajjassaṁ hatthamuccito;the bridled horse released from his hand,16.3Sārathī khaṇatī kāsuṁ,the charioteer dug a pit16.4nikhātuṁ pathaviyā mamaṁ.to bury me in the ground.

.1Adhiṭṭhitamadhiṭṭhānaṁ,I was afraid for the many different17.2tajjento vividhakāraṇā;resolves that I had undertaken,17.3Na bhindiṁ tamadhiṭṭhānaṁ,so I did not break that resolve,17.4bodhiyāyeva kāraṇā.because it was solely for awakening.

.1Mātāpitā na me dessā,I had no dislike of my parents,18.2attā me na ca dessiyo;nor did I dislike myself.18.3Sabbaññutaṁ piyaṁ mayhaṁ,But because omniscience is precious to me,18.4tasmā vatamadhiṭṭhahiṁ.that is why I resolved on my vow.

.1Ete aṅge adhiṭṭhāya,Having resolved the three factors,19.2Vassāni soḷasaṁ vasiṁ;I lived for sixteen years.19.3Adhiṭṭhānena me samo natthi,There is no one to equal my resolve:19.4Esā me adhiṭṭhānapāramī”ti.this is my perfection of resolve.”
