1.1Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

2.1“Idhāhaṁ, bhikkhave, ekaccaṁ puggalaṁ paduṭṭhacittaṁ evaṁ cetasā ceto paricca pajānāmi:∥“Mendicants, when I’ve comprehended the mind of an individual whose mind is corrupted, I understand:2.2‘imamhi cāyaṁ samaye puggalo kālaṁ kareyya yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye’.‘If this individual were to die right now, they would be placed in hell as if delivered there.’2.3Taṁ kissa hetu?Why is that?2.4Cittaṁ hissa, bhikkhave, paduṭṭhaṁ.Because their mind is corrupted.2.5Cetopadosahetu kho pana, bhikkhave, evam’idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjantī”ti.Corruption of mind is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.”

2.6Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.The Buddha spoke this matter.2.7Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:On this it is said:

3.1“Paduṭṭhacittaṁ ñatvāna,“Knowing an individual’s3.2ekaccaṁ idha puggalaṁ;corrupted mind,3.3Etamatthañca byākāsi,the Buddha explained this matter3.4buddho bhikkhūna santike.in the mendicants’ presence.

4.1Imamhi cāyaṁ samaye,If that individual4.2kālaṁ kayirātha puggalo;were to die at this time,4.3Nirayaṁ upapajjeyya,they’d be reborn in hell,4.4cittaṁ hissa padūsitaṁ.for their mind is corrupted.

5.1Yathā haritvā nikkhipeyya,That sort is cast down as surely5.2evamevaṁ tathāvidho;as if they’d been carried off and put there.5.3Cetopadosahetu hi,For corruption of mind is the reason5.4sattā gacchanti duggatin”ti.sentient beings go to a bad place.”

6.1Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

6.2Dasamaṁ.

6.3Dutiyo vaggo.

7.0Tassuddānaṁ

7.1Moho kodho atha makkho,7.2Vijjā taṇhā sekhaduve ca;7.3Bhedo sāmaggipuggalo,7.4Vaggamāhu dutiyanti vuccatīti.
