.1Evaṁ vutte, aññataro bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:When he said this, one of the mendicants said to the Buddha,5.2“kiṁ nu kho, bhante, devānaṁ sugatigamanasaṅkhātaṁ.“Sir, what do the gods reckon to be going to a good place?

.1Kiñca, bhante, devānaṁ suladdhalābhasaṅkhātaṁ.What do they reckon to be blessed with good fortune?

.1Kiṁ pana, bhante, devānaṁ suppatiṭṭhitasaṅkhātan”ti?What do they reckon to become well grounded?”

.1“Manussattaṁ kho, bhikkhu, devānaṁ sugatigamanasaṅkhātaṁ.“It is human existence, mendicant, that the gods reckon to be going to a good place.

.1Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.The Buddha spoke this matter.11.2Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:On this it is said:

.1“Yadā devo devakāyā,“When, with the fading of life,12.2cavati āyusaṅkhayā;a god passes from the realm of the gods,12.3Tayo saddā niccharanti,the gods utter three cries12.4devānaṁ anumodataṁ.of well-wishing:

.1‘Ito bho sugatiṁ gaccha,‘Go, worthy sir, from here to a good place,13.2manussānaṁ sahabyataṁ;in the company of humans.13.3Manussabhūto saddhamme,As a human being, gain supreme faith13.4labha saddhaṁ anuttaraṁ.in the true teaching.

.1Sā te saddhā niviṭṭhassa,May that faith of yours be settled,14.2mūlajātā patiṭṭhitā;with roots planted deep,14.3Yāvajīvaṁ asaṁhīrā,unfaltering all life long14.4saddhamme suppavedite.in the true teaching so well proclaimed.

.1Kāyaduccaritaṁ hitvā,Having given up bad conduct15.2vacīduccaritāni ca;by way of body,15.3Manoduccaritaṁ hitvā,speech, and mind,15.4yañcaññaṁ dosasañhitaṁ.and whatever else is corrupt;

.1Kāyena kusalaṁ katvā,and having done much good,16.2vācāya kusalaṁ bahuṁ;by way of body,16.3Manasā kusalaṁ katvā,speech, and mind,16.4appamāṇaṁ nirūpadhiṁ.limitless, free of attachments;

.1Tato opadhikaṁ puññaṁ,then, having made much worldly merit17.2katvā dānena taṁ bahuṁ;by giving gifts,17.3Aññepi macce saddhamme,establish other colleagues17.4brahmacariye nivesaya’.in the true teaching, the spiritual life.’

.1Imāya anukampāya,It is due to such sympathy18.2devā devaṁ yadā vidū;that when the gods know a god18.3Cavantaṁ anumodenti,is due to pass away, they wish them well:18.4ehi deva punappunan”ti.‘Come back, god, again and again!’”

.1Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Translator’s notes

  1. Kāye dubbaṇṇiyaṁ okkamati doesn’t refer to the dimming of a divine radiance. It describes a declining physical appearance (AN 5.50:9.4).
