Translator’s notes

  1. Jantu is literally, “one who is born”, and originally had the sense of “child” (Rig Veda 9.67.13) and hence “kin”. In the Suttas it occasionally retains that meaning (SN 11.11:2.1), but normally just means a “person”. It is exclusively reserved for poetry, so I use the elevated “personage”.

  2. The Vetaraṇī is described at Snp 3.10:26.1. It features in the later literature of the Brahmins (eg. Bhāgavata Purāṇa 5.26.22, Skanda Purāṇa 6.1.226.32) and Jains (Sūtrakṛtāṅga 1.5.1.8).

  3. Both PTS and BJT have the singular karoti here.

  4. Read saddhā rather than variant addhā (also at Ja 424:8.1 and its commentary). I think here he is affirming the good points made by the deities before making his own contribution.

    ↩ sn1.33:19.1
  5. The lesson of this verse is that study of “passages of teaching” (dhammapada) stimulates wisdom leading to liberation.
