Translator’s notes

  1. “Elder god” (pubbadeva) because originally the earth belonged to the titans and was tricked from them by employing the verses of the rites (Taittirīya Brāhmaṇa 3.2.9e, cf. Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa 1.2.5.1). This battle by debate recalls Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad 1.3.1, which explains that the titans are the elder children of Pajāpati. The younger children, the gods, sought to overcome them by means of reciting the sacred word (udgītha), but the titans pierced it with the evil that is bad speech.
