1.1Sāvatthinidānaṁ.At Sāvatthī.

1.2“Rūpaṁ, bhikkhave, ādittaṁ, vedanā ādittā, saññā ādittā, saṅkhārā ādittā, viññāṇaṁ ādittaṁ.“Mendicants, form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness are burning.1

1.3Evaṁ passaṁ, bhikkhave, sutavā ariyasāvako rūpasmimpi nibbindati, vedanāyapi … saññāyapi … saṅkhāresupi … viññāṇasmimpi nibbindati.Seeing this, a learned noble disciple grows disillusioned with form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness.1.4Nibbindaṁ virajjati; virāgā vimuccati. Vimuttasmiṁ vimuttamiti ñāṇaṁ hoti.Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they’re freed. When they’re freed, they know they’re freed.

1.5‘Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānātī”ti.They understand: ‘Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.’”

1.6Navamaṁ.

Translator’s notes

  1. The third discourse famously taught that the six senses are “burning” (SN 35.28), and here the Buddha applies the same metaphor to the aggregates.
