At the Chicken Monastery (1st)

Paṭhamakukkuṭārāmasutta

In a short discourse evidently set shortly after the Buddha’s passing, Venerable Bhadda asks Ānanda about the unholy life, or the unspiritual path. It is the wrong eightfold path.

Translator’s notes

  1. This pair feature up until SN 45.20.

With the rise of Pāṭaliputta, the “Chicken Monastery” (kukkuṭārāma) became an important center after the Buddha’s passing. Malalasekera (Dictionary of Pali Proper Names) suggests it was the same monastery later renowned as Aśokārāma. It seems that all the discourses set here are after the Parinibbana.
