Sāketasutta

The Buddha discusses the five faculties and the five powers. They are like a river that flows around a central island. From one point of view they can be considered different, but from another they are just the same stream.

2.1“Bhagavaṁmūlakā no, bhante, dhammā bhagavaṁnettikā bhagavaṁpaṭisaraṇā. Sādhu vata, bhante, bhagavantaṁyeva paṭibhātu etassa bhāsitassa attho. Bhagavato sutvā bhikkhū dhāressantī”ti …pe…“Our teachings are rooted in the Buddha. He is our guide and our refuge. Sir, may the Buddha himself please clarify the meaning of this. The mendicants will listen and remember it.”

3.1“Atthi, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma yāni pañcindriyāni tāni pañca balāni honti, yāni pañca balāni tāni pañcindriyāni honti.“Mendicants, there is a method in which the five faculties become the five powers, and the five powers become the five faculties.

4.1Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma yāni pañcindriyāni tāni pañca balāni honti, yāni pañca balāni tāni pañcindriyāni honti? And what is that method?4.2Yaṁ, bhikkhave, saddhindriyaṁ taṁ saddhābalaṁ, yaṁ saddhābalaṁ taṁ saddhindriyaṁ;The faculty of faith is the power of faith, and the power of faith is the faculty of faith.14.3yaṁ vīriyindriyaṁ taṁ vīriyabalaṁ, yaṁ vīriyabalaṁ taṁ vīriyindriyaṁ;The faculty of energy is the power of energy, and the power of energy is the faculty of energy.4.4yaṁ satindriyaṁ taṁ satibalaṁ, yaṁ satibalaṁ taṁ satindriyaṁ;The faculty of mindfulness is the power of mindfulness, and the power of mindfulness is the faculty of mindfulness.4.5yaṁ samādhindriyaṁ taṁ samādhibalaṁ, yaṁ samādhibalaṁ taṁ samādhindriyaṁ;The faculty of immersion is the power of immersion, and the power of immersion is the faculty of immersion.4.6yaṁ paññindriyaṁ taṁ paññābalaṁ, yaṁ paññābalaṁ taṁ paññindriyaṁ.The faculty of wisdom is the power of wisdom, and the power of wisdom is the faculty of wisdom.

4.7Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, nadī pācīnaninnā pācīnapoṇā pācīnapabbhārā, tassa majjhe dīpo.Suppose there was a river slanting, sloping, and inclining to the east, and in the middle was an island.4.8Atthi, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma tassā nadiyā eko sototveva saṅkhyaṁ gacchati. There’s a method in which that river can be reckoned to have just one stream.4.9Atthi pana, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma tassā nadiyā dve sotānitveva saṅkhyaṁ gacchanti. But there’s also a method in which that river can be reckoned to have two streams.

5.1PTS 5.220Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma tassā nadiyā eko sototveva saṅkhyaṁ gacchati? And what’s the method in which that river can be reckoned to have just one stream?5.2Yañca, bhikkhave, tassa dīpassa purimante udakaṁ, yañca pacchimante udakaṁ—By taking into account the water to the east and the west of the island,5.3ayaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma tassā nadiyā eko sototveva saṅkhyaṁ gacchati.that river can be reckoned to have just one stream.

6.1Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma tassā nadiyā dve sotānitveva saṅkhyaṁ gacchanti? And what’s the method in which that river can be reckoned to have two streams?6.2Yañca, bhikkhave, tassa dīpassa uttarante udakaṁ, yañca dakkhiṇante udakaṁ—By taking into account the water to the north and the south of the island,6.3ayaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaṁ pariyāyaṁ āgamma tassā nadiyā dve sotānitveva saṅkhyaṁ gacchanti.that river can be reckoned to have two streams.2

6.4Evameva kho, bhikkhave, yaṁ saddhindriyaṁ taṁ saddhābalaṁ, yaṁ saddhābalaṁ taṁ saddhindriyaṁ;By the same method, the faculty of faith is the power of faith, and the power of faith is the faculty of faith.6.5yaṁ vīriyindriyaṁ taṁ vīriyabalaṁ, yaṁ vīriyabalaṁ taṁ vīriyindriyaṁ;The faculty of energy is the power of energy, and the power of energy is the faculty of energy.6.6yaṁ satindriyaṁ taṁ satibalaṁ, yaṁ satibalaṁ taṁ satindriyaṁ;The faculty of mindfulness is the power of mindfulness, and the power of mindfulness is the faculty of mindfulness.6.7yaṁ samādhindriyaṁ taṁ samādhibalaṁ, yaṁ samādhibalaṁ taṁ samādhindriyaṁ;The faculty of immersion is the power of immersion, and the power of immersion is the faculty of immersion.6.8yaṁ paññindriyaṁ taṁ paññābalaṁ, yaṁ paññābalaṁ taṁ paññindriyaṁ.The faculty of wisdom is the power of wisdom, and the power of wisdom is the faculty of wisdom.

6.9Pañcannaṁ, bhikkhave, indriyānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharatī”ti.It’s because of developing and cultivating the five faculties that a mendicant realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom. And they live having realized it with their own insight in this very life due to the ending of defilements.”

6.10Tatiyaṁ.

Translator’s notes

  1. This establishes that the faculties and powers are the same. Yet the form used is not that of emphatic identity (which would employ repeated demonstrative pronouns), but could be translated, “the faculty of faith becomes the power of faith, the power of faith becomes the faculty of faith.”

    ↩ sn48.43:4.2
  2. The simile explains the different ways in which the stream can be considered, but exactly how this is to be applied is not spelled out. Rivers in the Ganges plain generally flow from west to east. This suggests that the two sets proceed in the same way, leading to the ocean of Nibbāna. Along the way, however, they are for a short time split into north and south. The commentary explains the difference in terms of positive and negative: the faculties consolidate the positive qualities (of faith, etc.) while the powers quash the negative qualities (of doubt, etc.).
