0.3AsurindakasuttaWith Bhāradvāja the Fiend
1.1Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe.At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground.1.2Assosi kho asurindakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo:The brahmin Bhāradvāja the Fiend heard a rumor to the effect that11.3“bhāradvājagotto brāhmaṇo kira samaṇassa gotamassa santike agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajito”ti kupito anattamano yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ asabbhāhi pharusāhi vācāhi akkosati paribhāsati.a brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan had gone forth from the lay life to homelessness in the presence of the ascetic Gotama. Angry and displeased he went to the Buddha and abused and insulted him with rude, harsh words.
1.4Evaṁ vutte, bhagavā tuṇhī ahosi.But when he said this, the Buddha kept silent.
1.5Atha kho asurindakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:Then Bhāradvāja the Fiend said to the Buddha,1.6“jitosi, samaṇa, jitosi, samaṇā”ti.“You’re beaten, ascetic, you’re beaten!”
2.1“Jayaṁ ve maññati bālo,“‘Ha! I won!’ thinks the fool,2.2vācāya pharusaṁ bhaṇaṁ;when speaking with harsh words.2.3Jayañcevassa taṁ hoti,The victory for one who understands2.4yā titikkhā vijānato.is that very endurance.
3.1Tasseva tena pāpiyo,When you get angry at an angry person3.2yo kuddhaṁ paṭikujjhati;you just make things worse for yourself.3.3Kuddhaṁ appaṭikujjhanto,When you don’t get angry at an angry person3.4saṅgāmaṁ jeti dujjayaṁ.you win a battle hard to win.
4.1Ubhinnamatthaṁ carati,When you know that the other is angry,4.2attano ca parassa ca;you act for the good of both4.3Paraṁ saṅkupitaṁ ñatvā,yourself and the other4.4yo sato upasammati.if you’re mindful and stay calm.
5.1Ubhinnaṁ tikicchantānaṁ,People inexpert in Dhamma5.2attano ca parassa ca;consider one who heals both5.3Janā maññanti bāloti,oneself and the other5.4ye dhammassa akovidā”ti.to be a fool.”
6.1Evaṁ vutte, asurindakabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:When he had spoken, Bhāradvāja the Fiend said to the Buddha,6.2“abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe…“Excellent, worthy Gotama! …” …6.3abbhaññāsi.6.4Aññataro ca panāyasmā bhāradvājo arahataṁ ahosīti.And Venerable Bhāradvāja became one of the perfected.
