1.1“Kacci abhiṇhasaṁvāsā,“Does familiarity breed contempt,1.2nāvajānāsi paṇḍitaṁ;even for the man of wisdom?1.3Ukkādhāro manussānaṁ,Do you honor he who holds aloft1.4kacci apacito tayā”.the torch for all humanity?”

2.1“Nāhaṁ abhiṇhasaṁvāsā,“Familiarity breeds no contempt2.2avajānāmi paṇḍitaṁ;for the man of wisdom.2.3Ukkādhāro manussānaṁ,I always honor he who holds aloft2.4niccaṁ apacito mayā”.the torch for all humanity.”

3.1“Pañca kāmaguṇe hitvā,“One who’s given up the five sensual stimulations,3.2piyarūpe manorame;so pleasing and delightful,3.3Saddhāya gharā nikkhamma,and who’s left the home life out of faith—3.4dukkhassantakaro bhava.let them make an end to suffering!

4.1Mitte bhajassu kalyāṇe,Mix with spiritual friends,4.2pantañca sayanāsanaṁ;stay in remote lodgings,4.3Vivittaṁ appanigghosaṁ,secluded and quiet,4.4mattaññū hohi bhojane.and eat in moderation.

5.1Cīvare piṇḍapāte ca,Robes, almsfood,5.2paccaye sayanāsane;requisites and lodgings:5.3Etesu taṇhaṁ mākāsi,don’t crave such things;5.4mā lokaṁ punarāgami.don’t come back to this world again.

6.1Saṁvuto pātimokkhasmiṁ,Be restrained in the monastic code6.2indriyesu ca pañcasu;and the five sense faculties.6.3Sati kāyagatā tyatthu,With mindfulness immersed in the body,6.4nibbidābahulo bhava.be full of disillusionment.

7.1Nimittaṁ parivajjehi,Turn away from the sign7.2subhaṁ rāgūpasañhitaṁ;that’s attractive, provoking lust.7.3Asubhāya cittaṁ bhāvehi,With mind unified and serene,7.4ekaggaṁ susamāhitaṁ.meditate on the ugly aspects of the body.

8.1Animittañca bhāvehi,Meditate on the signless,8.2Mānānusayamujjaha;give up the tendency to conceit;8.3Tato mānābhisamayā,and when you comprehend conceit,8.4Upasanto carissatī”ti.you will live at peace.”

9.1Itthaṁ sudaṁ bhagavā āyasmantaṁ rāhulaṁ imāhi gāthāhi abhiṇhaṁ ovadatīti.That is how the Buddha regularly advised Venerable Rāhula with these verses.
