1.1Hiriṁ tarantaṁ vijigucchamānaṁ,Flouting conscience, loathing it,1.2Tavāhamasmi iti bhāsamānaṁ;saying “I’m on your side”,1.3Sayhāni kammāni anādiyantaṁ,but not following up in deeds—1.4Neso mamanti iti naṁ vijaññā.know they’re not on your side.

2.1Ananvayaṁ piyaṁ vācaṁ,Some say nice things to their friends2.2yo mittesu pakubbati;without following it up.2.3Akarontaṁ bhāsamānaṁ,The wise will recognize2.4parijānanti paṇḍitā.one who talks without doing.

3.1Na so mitto yo sadā appamatto,No true friend relentlessly3.2Bhedāsaṅkī randhamevānupassī;suspects betrayal, looking for fault.3.3Yasmiñca seti urasīva putto,One on whom you rest, like a child on the breast,3.4Sa ve mitto yo parehi abhejjo.is a true friend, not split from you by others.

4.1Pāmujjakaraṇaṁ ṭhānaṁ,One whose reward is the fruit4.2pasaṁsāvahanaṁ sukhaṁ;of bearing the burden of service4.3Phalānisaṁso bhāveti,develops a happy state,4.4vahanto porisaṁ dhuraṁ.producing joy and attracting praise.

5.1Pavivekarasaṁ pitvā,One who has drunk the nectar of seclusion5.2Rasaṁ upasamassa ca;and the nectar of peace,5.3Niddaro hoti nippāpo,free of stress, free of evil,5.4Dhammapītirasaṁ pivanti.drinks the joyous nectar of Dhamma.
