2.1Mama saṅkappamaññāya,Knowing my thoughts,2.2codesi narasārathi;the trainer of men scolded me.2.3Tato me āsi saṁvego,I was struck with a sense of urgency,2.4abbhuto lomahaṁsano.so astonishing and hair-raising!

3.1Pubbe jaṭilabhūtassa,Setting aside the petty powers3.2yā me siddhi parittikā;I had before as a matted-hair ascetic,3.3Tāhaṁ tadā nirākatvā,I then went forth3.4pabbajiṁ jinasāsane.in the victor’s instruction.

4.1Pubbe yaññena santuṭṭho,I used to be content with sacrifice,4.2kāmadhātupurakkhato;the realm of sensual pleasures was my priority.4.3Pacchā rāgañca dosañca,But later I eradicated desire,4.4mohañcāpi samūhaniṁ.and hatred and also delusion.

5.1Pubbenivāsaṁ jānāmi,I know my past lives;5.2dibbacakkhu visodhitaṁ;my clairvoyance is clarified;5.3Iddhimā paracittaññū,I have psychic powers, and know the minds of others;5.4dibbasotañca pāpuṇiṁ.I have attained clairaudience.

6.1Yassa catthāya pabbajito,I’ve attained the goal6.2agārasmānagāriyaṁ;for the sake of which I went forth6.3So me attho anuppatto,from the lay life to homelessness—6.4sabbasaṁyojanakkhayo”ti.the ending of all fetters.
