Translator’s notes

  1. Modern Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh.

    ↩ thig15.1:6.1
  2. Modern Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh. This is about 800 km to the north-east of Ujjain. The two cities lie on the so-called “southern road”, which leads from the prosperous cities of the Gangetic plain via Ujjain to the western trading ports on the Arabian Sea, and on to Andhra Pradesh on the east coast (see Snp 5.1:36.1).

    ↩ thig15.1:7.2
  3. Bhatti “devotion” in this line is followed by anuratta (“loyal”) in the next. The persistence of senses of these words is shown by their occurrence together in the much later Haribhaktikalpalatikā 1.10 (bhaktānuraktaṁ).

    ↩ thig15.1:14.1
  4. Accept Norman’s reading vissatthā (confident, without fear) for vissaṭṭhā (clearly).

    ↩ thig15.1:18.4
  5. Poṭṭhi is unique in Pali, and evidently represents the Sanskrit pauṣṭika, a robe used for the tonsure ceremony. Also, the father uses ghaṭika (“pot”) rather than the familiar patta (“bowl”).

    ↩ thig15.1:23.4
  6. For mallaka as “mug” see AN 3.100:4.1.

    ↩ thig15.1:24.3
  7. “Twice-born” (dvijātī) is an epithet of brahmins, referring to material and spiritual births. It is normally found only in later literature, and this might be the first recorded usage of the idiom.

    ↩ thig15.1:31.4
  8. The text is literally “neither woman nor man”. The preceding verses speak repeatedly of castration, making it clear that this means having no genitals, rather than simply being a person who is non-binary.

    ↩ thig15.1:43.3
  9. For pattayobbanaṁ as “come of age”, i.e. old enough to have sex, see Ja 532:80.4.

    ↩ thig15.1:46.2
  10. Like an ox in a pen (AN 6.60:3.1).
