.1Santeke samaṇabrāhmaṇā evaṁvādino evaṁdiṭṭhino:There were some ascetics and brahmins who had this doctrine and view:2.2“sassato attā ca loko ca, idameva saccaṁ moghamaññan”ti.“The self and the cosmos are eternal. This is the only truth, anything else is futile.”

.1Santi paneke samaṇabrāhmaṇā evaṁvādino evaṁdiṭṭhino:Others held views such as the following, each regarding their own view as true and others as silly.3.2“asassato attā ca loko ca, idameva saccaṁ moghamaññan”ti.“The self and the cosmos are not eternal.”

.1Santeke samaṇabrāhmaṇā evaṁvādino evaṁdiṭṭhino:6.2“sayaṅkato attā ca loko ca, idameva saccaṁ moghamaññan”ti.“The self and the cosmos are made by oneself.”

.1Santi paneke samaṇabrāhmaṇā evaṁvādino evaṁdiṭṭhino:7.2“paraṅkato attā ca loko ca, idameva saccaṁ moghamaññan”ti.“The self and the cosmos are made by another.”

.1Santeke samaṇabrāhmaṇā evaṁvādino evaṁdiṭṭhino:10.2“sassataṁ sukhadukkhaṁ attā ca loko ca, idameva saccaṁ moghamaññan”ti.“Pleasure and pain are eternal, and the self and the cosmos.”

.1Santi paneke samaṇabrāhmaṇā evaṁvādino evaṁdiṭṭhino:11.2“asassataṁ sukhadukkhaṁ attā ca loko ca, idameva saccaṁ moghamaññan”ti.“Pleasure and pain are not eternal, and the self and the cosmos.”

.1Santeke samaṇabrāhmaṇā evaṁvādino evaṁdiṭṭhino:12.2“sassatañca asassatañca sukhadukkhaṁ attā ca loko ca, idameva saccaṁ moghamaññan”ti.“Pleasure and pain are both eternal and not eternal, and the self and the cosmos.”

.1Santi paneke samaṇabrāhmaṇā evaṁvādino evaṁdiṭṭhino:13.2“neva sassataṁ nāsassataṁ sukhadukkhaṁ attā ca loko ca, idameva saccaṁ moghamaññan”ti.“Pleasure and pain are neither eternal nor not eternal, and the self and the cosmos.”

.1Santi paneke samaṇabrāhmaṇā evaṁvādino evaṁdiṭṭhino:17.2“asayaṅkāraṁ aparaṅkāraṁ adhiccasamuppannaṁ sukhadukkhaṁ attā ca loko ca, idameva saccaṁ moghamaññan”ti.“Pleasure and pain have arisen anomalously, not made by oneself or another, and the self and the cosmos.”

.1Te bhaṇḍanajātā kalahajātā vivādāpannā aññamaññaṁ mukhasattīhi vitudantā viharanti:They were fighting, quarreling, and disputing, continually wounding each other with barbed words:18.2“ediso dhammo, nediso dhammo;“Such is Truth, such is not Truth!18.3nediso dhammo, ediso dhammo”ti.Such is not Truth, such is Truth!”

.1Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sāvatthiṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁsu.Then several mendicants robed up in the morning and, taking their bowls and robes, entered Sāvatthī for alms.19.2Sāvatthiyaṁ piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṁ piṇḍapātapaṭikkantā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu.Then, after the meal, when they returned from almsround, they went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what was happening.19.3Ekamantaṁ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ:

.1“Idha, bhante, sambahulā nānātitthiyasamaṇabrāhmaṇaparibbājakā sāvatthiyaṁ paṭivasanti nānādiṭṭhikā nānākhantikā nānārucikā nānādiṭṭhinissayanissitā.

.1Santeke samaṇabrāhmaṇā evaṁvādino evaṁdiṭṭhino:21.2‘sassato attā ca loko ca, idameva saccaṁ moghamaññan’ti …pe…21.3te bhaṇḍanajātā kalahajātā vivādāpannā aññamaññaṁ mukhasattīhi vitudantā viharanti:21.4‘ediso dhammo, nediso dhammo;21.5nediso dhammo, ediso dhammo’”ti.

.1“Aññatitthiyā, bhikkhave, paribbājakā andhā acakkhukā.22.2Te atthaṁ na jānanti anatthaṁ na jānanti, dhammaṁ na jānanti adhammaṁ na jānanti.22.3Te atthaṁ ajānantā anatthaṁ ajānantā, dhammaṁ ajānantā adhammaṁ ajānantā bhaṇḍanajātā kalahajātā vivādāpannā aññamaññaṁ mukhasattīhi vitudantā viharanti:22.4‘ediso dhammo, nediso dhammo;22.5nediso dhammo, ediso dhammo’”ti.

.1Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:

.1“Ahaṅkārapasutāyaṁ pajā,“Folk are fixated on the I-maker,24.2Paraṅkārūpasaṁhitā;which is tied up with the other-maker.24.3Etadeke nābbhaññaṁsu,There are some who do not realize this,24.4Na naṁ sallanti addasuṁ.they do not see the dart.

.1Etañca sallaṁ paṭikacca passato,But when they see this dart,25.2Ahaṁ karomīti na tassa hoti;they do not think, ‘I make it’,25.3Paro karotīti na tassa hoti.nor ‘another makes it’.

.1Mānupetā ayaṁ pajā,These folk are caught up in conceit,26.2Mānaganthā mānavinibaddhā;tied by conceit, shackled by conceit.26.3Diṭṭhīsu sārambhakathā,Vehemently defending their views,26.4Saṁsāraṁ nātivattatī”ti.they don’t escape transmigration.”
