.1Evaṁ me sutaṁ—So I have heard.1.2ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosambiyaṁ viharati ghositārāme.At one time the Buddha was staying near Kosambī in Ghosita’s monastery.1.3Tena kho pana samayena rañño utenassa uyyānagatassa antepuraṁ daḍḍhaṁ hoti, pañca ca itthisatāni kālaṅkatāni honti sāmāvatīpamukhāni.Now at that time, while King Udena was visiting a park, his royal compound burned down. Five hundred women died, with Queen Sāmāvatī at their head.

.1Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya kosambiṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁsu.Then several mendicants robed up in the morning and, taking their bowls and robes, entered Kosambī for alms.2.2Kosambiyaṁ piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṁ piṇḍapātapaṭikkantā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu.Then, after the meal, when they returned from almsround, they went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him had happened. They asked the Buddha,2.3Ekamantaṁ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ:2.4“idha, bhante, rañño utenassa uyyānagatassa antepuraṁ daḍḍhaṁ, pañca ca itthisatāni kālaṅkatāni sāmāvatīpamukhāni.2.5Tāsaṁ, bhante, upāsikānaṁ kā gati ko abhisamparāyo”ti?“Sir, where have those laywomen been reborn in the next life?”

.1“Santettha, bhikkhave, upāsikāyo sotāpannā, santi sakadāgāminiyo, santi anāgāminiyo.“Among those laywomen there were stream-enterers, once-returners, and non-returners.3.2Sabbā tā, bhikkhave, upāsikāyo anipphalā kālaṅkatā”ti.None of those laywomen died without some fruit of the practice.”

.1Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:

.1“Mohasambandhano loko,“The world is caught up in delusion,5.2bhabbarūpova dissati;but is looked on as making sense.5.3Upadhibandhano bālo,The fool caught up in attachment5.4tamasā parivārito;is surrounded by darkness.5.5Sassatoriva khāyati,It seems as if eternal,5.6passato natthi kiñcanan”ti.but for one who sees, there is nothing.”
