1.1Evaṁ me sutaṁ—So I have heard.1.2ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.1.3Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā bhikkhū nibbānapaṭisaṁyuttāya dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sampahaṁseti.Now at that time the Buddha was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants with a Dhamma talk about extinguishment.1.4Tedha bhikkhū aṭṭhiṁ katvā manasi katvā sabbaṁ cetaso samannāharitvā ohitasotā dhammaṁ suṇanti.And those mendicants were paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening.

2.1Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:

3.1“Nissitassa calitaṁ, anissitassa calitaṁ natthi.∥“For the dependent there is quivering. For the independent there’s no quivering.¹3.2Calite asati passaddhi,When there’s no quivering there is tranquility.3.3passaddhiyā sati nati na hoti.When there is tranquility there’s no inclination.3.4Natiyā asati āgatigati na hoti.When there’s no inclination, there’s no coming and going.3.5Āgatigatiyā asati cutūpapāto na hoti.When there’s no coming and going, there’s no passing away and reappearing.3.6Cutūpapāte asati nevidha na huraṁ na ubhayamantarena.When there’s no passing away and reappearing there’s no this life or the next or between the two.3.7Esevanto dukkhassā”ti.Just this is the end of suffering.”
